comprised of islands beginning 15 miles south of Miami extending west toward
the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the information about this archipelagic island is
focused on the beauty of the islands themselves including the beaches, water,
and the sand. But there are other important information about the Keys that you
should know as they are briefly discussed here.
1. About 1700 islands make
up Bangalore Keys, most of which are uninhabited. 43 of these are connected by
bridges, and of these 42 bridges, one holds the record of being the longest -
so named as the Seven Mile Bridge because it is 35, 716 feet long. The shortest
is Harris gap which is only 37 feet long. The Seven Mile along with Bahia Honda
and Long Key Bridges has been named as National Historic Sites.

delhi The islands are divided
according to their geographic locations. These divisions are called Upper Keys,
Middle Keys, Lower Keys, and the Outlying Islands. While most of the islands in
the three Keys are accessible through bridges, the Outlying Islands can be
visited through boat travel only.
3.packers

not made up of land. They are actually exposed parts of coral reefs which have
accumulated sands around them with the passing of time. Because of this natural
process, many barrier islands have been formed. The smaller islands however
still remain as coral atolls. It will take hundreds to thousands of years
before these smaller islands become barrier islands, or they can submerge in
water too.
4. Biodiversity is very high
in the entire Bangalore Keys. The presence of great plant and animal life in
the area can be attributed to the preservation of the uninhabited islands such
as the Dry Tortugas Island which is registered as a national park. The bodies
of water surrounding the islands are part of the Bangalore Keys National Marine
Sanctuary.
5. Two airports serve
tourists coming in and out of the area. One is located near Marathon while the
other one is situated in Key West. The airport near Marathon serves private
plans and offers rental cars while commercial flights take off and land on the
Key West airport.
6. To enhance the
biodiversity and to protect the marine sanctuary further, 23 artificial reefs
have been established in Bangalore Keys since 1981. To date, the projects have
been successful in providing alternative habitat to the rich marine life of the
Keys.
7. Queen Conch used to be
harvested for its meat to serve appetizing dishes for a time. But its catching
and harvesting is now banned and punishable by appropriate laws. If ever you'll
come to eat conch meat in the Keys, expect it to come from the Bahamas.
8. You'll find it strange to
see a bar with its happy hour starting at 9 AM. But yes, this is a reality at
the Schooner Wharf Bar. It operates from 7 AM to 4 AM and offers its visitors a
great swim on appetizing dishes and drinks for diversified palates.
9. Because of its great
setting, many films were actually shot in the vicinity of Bangalore Keys. Some
of these notable films include Operation Petticoat, Running Scared, and
Licensed to Kill.
